A vision is an essential building block for teacher leadership (Phelps, 2008). Florey
primary school has a vision statement which states, “To empower students to acquire,
demonstrate, articulate and value knowledge and skills that will support them, as life-long
learners, to participate in and contribute to the global world and practice the core values of the
school: respect, tolerance & inclusion, and excellence” (Florey Primary School, 2021).
According to Phelps (2008), a vision articulates what a teacher’s belief system is and how they
will make it happen. The above statement compares with Phelps’s statement in that they envision
a learning environment where students will be supported to achieve their potential and become
better versions of themselves. They articulate what the learning environments will provide to
students and the impact that instruction will have on them now and in the future.
The second vision statement that I located online is for Belmont High School. The
statement is, “Belmont High School is a learning community for both students and adults. We
organize learning according to developmental needs and provide learning experiences,
wellbeing, a positive set of values and attitudes, and outstanding opportunities and experiences.
On leaving school, our young people are equipped for the challenges of the 21st century and
have enjoyed their time with us” (Belmont High School, 2021). This vision statement compares
with Phelps’s in that they both explain how learning is organized within the classroom and how
that will impact student progress. Also, the statements acknowledge the need to solve problems
in society. They thus state how each learning environment will promote learning growth and
equip students with skills that will help them solve 21 st -century challenges.

According to Phelps (2008), each teacher must see the value of being a leader before they
can implement their vision. Thus, teacher leaders stand a better chance at implementing and
fulfilling their visions compared to teachers who do not take the initiative to lead. It, therefore,
means that implementing a vision requires a teacher to act in one or all of three areas of
influence. They should be influential within their subject areas or whichever area they choose to
influence for them to be successful at implementing their visions.
My vision statement will be
This classroom will be a place where students develop their passions and individualities as they
prepare to go out into the world and serve society. The learning environment will be safe and one
that will facilitate a culture of learning that will inspire free-thinking and open-mindedness
among students. In creating this environment, I will plan adequately and cultivate partnerships
with my students. Because a happy student is a successful one, I will strive to provide a
stimulating classroom where all students will be fairly treated, valued, and their
accomplishments celebrated. Each student will have access to creative, innovative, and
comprehensive instructional programs that will prepare them for the 21 st century working place.
To equip students with 21 st -century skills through providing adequate instruction and training
that will prepare them for the global society. This classroom will produce digital and empowered
learners who will share in the development of its vision.
