Educational assessment is important in improving the processes of teaching and learning.
Among the four types of assessment, I think that formative assessment is the most important in
regard to student learning. According to Lefrancois (2013), formative assessment is unique in
that it is embedded in the process of teaching and learning. Although much of this assessment is
informal, it provides the educator and learner with timely feedback that is aimed at directly
improving the teaching-learning process. The information provided is very useful as it is used by
the teacher and learner to make changes and modifications to enhance the processes of teaching
and learning. It entails ongoing strategies such as oral questions asked during the period of
learning or observations made by the teacher on the performances of individual students during
the lesson and after quizzes and assignments. Due to its nature, formative assessment is for
learning. It is useful to the process of instruction as it provides feedback that is incorporated in
the instruction and learning to further enhance student performance and academic success. The
feedback received can be put to use before a student is formally graded. This type of assessment
provides room for improvement. I think it is the most important because it informs the decisions
made by an educator within the learning environment. Educational assessment is intended to
support teaching and learning. As such, of the four types of assessment, I think that formative

assessment provides the highest support to the learning process. It is possible to act on the
feedback provided, and this is the best thing about this type of assessment.
