In addressing Jeremy’s crisis, I would use the safer-r model. T has five steps, and the first
one is stabilization. In stabilizing Jeremy, I would work to establish a rapport with him. I will
introduce myself and let him do the same. I will also ensure that Jeremy feels safe by setting a
working and friendly environment. The second stage is the acknowledgement of the event. I will
give Jeremy time to explain the who, what, and when of his story. Since he tested positive for
THC, this might entail him explaining what drugs he has been using. It may be only one drug or
several. He will also explain when this started and how things got to where they currently are in
terms of his relations with his wife, professionally and with family members. I ill stick to the
facts and refrain from judgment. According to Everly (2016), the acknowledgement stage entails
listening to the client’s responses and reactions to the event. It is important to avoid judgment
statements, as this may discourage the client from expressing his problem.
The third stage will involve facilitating understanding. I will encourage Jeremy to express
his difficult emotions and take him through the process of understanding that impact of the event
or the crisis. I will paraphrase Jeremy’s content and normalize the event. Will attribute the
emotions and reactions to the situation as opposed to his personal weaknesses. I will then
encourage Jeremy to practice effective coping by identifying some personal stress management
tools that will be effective in his situation. Some of the techniques that might help Jeremy,
including engaging in activities that distract him from thinking about the drugs that he has been
using. Relaxation response training might also help as Jeremy has had suicidal thoughts. Everly
(2016) suggests that external support and coping resources are key to ensuring that a person gets
through a crisis. As such, I will walk with Jeremy, conduct follow-up as he walks through his
recovery journey. Lastly, I will assess Jeremy’s ability to function. Depending on the evaluation,

I will check whether Jeremy can recover on his own or whether he needs advanced help, in
which case I will refer him to specialists.
Crisis intervention helps individuals who are experiencing psychological disequilibrium
so that they can receive the help that they need (Stevens & Ellerbrock, 1995). Other than the
safer-r model explained above, there are other models that can help get Jeremy out of his state of
psychological disequilibrium. One such model provides a one-session crisis intervention
psychotherapy starts with recognizing the crisis, and helping the client identify the precipitant
(Simpson, 2019). In this first stage, I will build a rapport, assemble Jeremy’s history, and
demonstrate an active exploration of the problem. It entails helping Jeremy identify the stressors
that are driving the crisis. I will help Jeremy reconstruct his history, and this may be helpful in
challenging some of the decisions that he made and that led to the current event. This model also
suggests characterizing the patient’s responses and formulating a workable action plan. Social
support, in this case, Jeremy’s wife and extended family are necessary to walk Jeremy through
recovery. The model is also effective in ensuring that Jeremy gets the support that he requires.
