The pre-crisis phase isthe first one, and it entails seeking to minimize risks that are known to or could lead to a crisis. Itentails creating a plan on how to manage the crisis, selecting the team that will be trained oncrisis management, and then then the crisis management team is tested (Coombs, 2008). Thecrisis management plan should be updated on an annual basis to ensure it meets the current needsof the organization. The second phase is crisis response, and it involves action taken bymanagement after a crisis hits. Clear guidelines are set beforehand to ensure that involved partiesare aware of their initial response when a crisis hits. The responders need to speak in agreementand act in unity as they respond hence the need for a plan and clear guidelines. The third phase ispost-crisis, which is usually after the dust has settled and the crisis managed (Coombs, 2008).The organization is usually in the process of returning to normalcy. The crisis is evaluated, andlessons are taken. Usually, the response and plan are re-evaluated with the aim of identifyingareas where improvement is needed. It is usually time to re-evaluate the plan. Every crisispresents a learning opportunity to do better. In the case of an institution, it can be a case by casebasis, where small conflicts among students are handled and resolved. Student affairspractitioners then re-evaluate strategies used and make adjustments where change is needed.
