21 st -century learning is preparing children for the rapidly changing global economy.
Students are being prepared to think critically, as well as know how to use a wide range of tools
to enhance collaboration, communication, and leadership skills and capabilities. The learning is
creating cultural awareness, which students require to think and act globally. Students are being
taught how to understand, respect and embrace diversity.
Teachers are changing their way of delivering content. They are adopting ways that
mirror the 21 st -century workplace (Krogh et al., 2015). Also, they provide real-world relevance
and rigor in their teaching. As such the professional development of teachers has also changed.
Teachers’ professional development has changed. Teachers are teaming up to discuss and
analyze their students’ learning progress. They deliberate on skills that are necessary to students
in the 21 st century and try them out in such collaborative settings first before they can teach and
share the same with their students. Teachers then share the skills with their students and meet
again to discuss how effective or ineffective the skills were. Depending on the outcome, they can
then deliberate on the way forward. Such collaborative meetings help teachers develop their
professional skills as they learn more from other teachers.
My role as a future educator will change, as there are many things that I will do different
compared to a teacher in the traditional classroom. First, my role will change from providing
direct instruction in front of a classroom with students to facilitating online learning. I will
provide content, inform students, and provide feedback to student’s questions online. My role
will involve building a community of online learners, a role that teachers in the traditional setting

did not engage in. also, I will connect more with learners online even after my lesson with them
is over through the use of different technology tools.
My role as a future educator will limit my personal touch with my students as more
engagement will be happening online. As such, I will ensure that I use the valuable and limited
time that I will have with the students to develop the student’s communication, collaboration,
and critical thinking skills. They will require to use these skills more in their learning as well as
in the workplace. Therefore, I will facilitate discussions and interactions as well as use questions
and discussion posts to increase their engagement with one another. Consequently, this will help
sharpen their skills and ensure that they are better placed in the job market.
