My Personal Teaching Philosophy

Great educators always aim at dispensing basic knowledge to learners that will propel
them into becoming successful citizens in an advanced democratic nation. Knowing or
unknowingly, the acts of teachers are informed by philosophical viewpoints. A teacher’s beliefs,
values, interests, and attitudes influence the decisions they make in a learning environment. A
teacher ensures that his or her students become responsible by allowing them to learn from their
own mistakes. As a prospective teacher, my philosophy is that teaching entails helping students
discover their personal learning from their experiences, and I have a role in assisting them in
understanding their own unique rendition.
The philosophy that relates to my views of teaching and learning as a teacher is social
reconstructionism. I believe that the role of a teacher is to help create citizens that will uphold
social justice and learn from the social injustices of the past. As Theodore Brameld and George
Counts hold, teaching entails learning through community service projects as it instills noble
ideals among young people (Krogh et al., 2015). Hope Mayne argues that the value of an
education system is influenced by the quality of educators. Teachers who are critical citizens
prepare students to deal with issues of equality and access (Mayne, 2014).
When I was in high school, we participated so much in community projects, and this is
where I learned values such as compassion and kindness. I built my own meaning of life through
learning experiences that were facilitated by my teacher. Today, I run a not-for-profit
organization because I learned the value of helping. I want to impact the lives of my community
members positively. Thus, I believe in learning through community projects as this worked and
still works for me.

As a teacher, some of the goals that I will set for my students include; learners will be
able to work in teams, learners will be able to use digital tools provided in class, and learners will
be able to demonstrate independent learning skills. These are long term goals that cannot be
achieved in one lesson. Therefore, I will be consistent in imparting learners with these skills
throughout our interaction in class. Students will learn problem-solving skills. Through
behaviorism theory, I will ensure that it is clear to learners on how group assignments must be
handled, the theory will be useful in ensuring that “Learning goals are carefully laid out in
advance, providing clarity to learners” (Krogh et al., 2015).
As a teacher and a lifelong learner, I will ensure that I constantly remain updated on new
technology tools and how they can be incorporated into the classroom set-up. I will prioritize
mindfulness. Also, I will cultivate good relationships with colleagues and constantly learn
positively from them. I will join social media groups of teachers to ensure I am updated on new
technology tools and their use. Effective teaching entails constantly learning as the world is
constantly evolving, and so are the roles of a teacher.
Overall, as a teacher helps learners discover themselves through learning experiences.
They too get an opportunity to discover themselves. Teaching presents a learning environment
for both the learners and the teacher. As a teacher creates socially active and critically thinking
individuals, he or she also sharpen his or her skills on the same. Community service projects
present learning opportunities for both the teacher and the students.
