Career Plan Reflection

Every aspect of my teaching career will be shaped by the role I want to play as an
educator. in five years from now, I aspire to be an educator, shaping the minds of young people
and helping shape their destinies. One of the reasons I enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in
education is because I wanted to become a teacher and impact the lives of my students. Thus, my
goal is to graduate, have my class where I will ensure that my students get the best education
possible. I want to be a high school teacher and earning this degree with allow me to do more
than ‘just teaching.’ I want to mentor students and influence them to pursue their unique interests
by using their abilities to explore greater heights.
High school students are usually at a stage in life when they are going through a lot of
developmental changes, and they require more attention and help to sail through the changes.
The experience I have raising my ten children, most of whom are in this stage has prepared me
adequately for this role. Besides, in choosing my line of profession, I combined two of my
interest, ‘sports and teaching.’ In the AAU basketball program which I run, I help young people
develop their talents. I have the heart to help, and this aligns with the teaching profession.
According to Krogh at al., (2015), “Teachers serve as frontline helpers. They help students
recognize their potential and develop strengths.” Teaching will give me an opportunity to pursue
and develop my interests every day and this is my greatest motivation. Other than obtaining this
degree, I hope to complete a teacher certification program within the next three years. Within the
same period, I will complete an approved teacher preparation program. During the period I will
be pursuing my degree, I will contact teachers who have been in the profession for a substantial
period of time, and form networks with them so that they can guide me accordingly upon
completing my program. They will be instrumental in my transition phase as I join the profession

as a new teacher. In the next four months, I want to look for an institution where I can volunteer
as a high school teacher. While at it, I hope to gain experience that will help me become better
by the time I get a classroom to teach and manage. Substitute teaching will be an effective way
to introduce myself to the teaching profession.
One of the barriers to becoming a successful teacher is rigid content standards and
curriculum. Teachers are expected to follow curriculums and standards that are rigid and do not
cater to the dissimilar learning needs of the learners in a class. Teaching should be different and
learning should be different to cater to the unique student needs.. However, in most learning
institutions, this is not the case. Although I do not have any individuals in my personal or
professional network at the moment who can help me overcome these barriers, I hope to have
them by the time I join the profession as a qualified teacher. I hope to connect with policymakers
and make contributions to the kind of policies that could help individualize teaching and learning
to ensure that it meets the needs of the students.
