Fault Lines and Privileges

Fault lines have a direct impact on one’s worldview. After observing my media
consumption for three days, I realized that there are certain fault lines at work in my selection of
the content that I consume. First, I realized that I consume a lot of podcast content. Prefer
podcasts that discuss trending issues in technology. I feel that this keeps me up-to-date with the
current tools that have been invented. Sometimes I discover how to use some technology tools or
new ways of using the tools that I already have. My kind of content is educational in nature. As a
scholar, I think that this too is a fault line. I realized that I am able to listen to alot of this content
while driving. This is my privilege or special advantage. If i was not driving, i would not have
had such an opportunity. I enjoy the quiet in the car by listening to podcasts and I am able to
learn while at it.
This exercise made me realize that fault lines and privilege have a lot to do with the kind
of content that people consume, the way in which they consume it as well as frequency. Some
people work many jobs and do not have the privilege to listen to podcast content because they
are either working one job or the other or even sleeping to rest from their day’s busy schedules’
additionally, i consume educational content but this may not be the case with other people
especially based on age, career affiliations, and even gender. Overall, I intend to make changes
in my media consumption by including entertainment content such as music and movies.
