It is true that when top managers encourage supervisors to set goals, assess performance,
and provide feedback to employees, the organization enjoys higher levels of productivity. This is
because the productivity of an organization is the aggregate productivity of all of its employees
(Tziner & Rabenu, 2018). Thus, increasing productivity of individual employees greatly
improves productivity of the organization.
Employee productivity can be increased through effective communication of
expectations, assessment of performance, and provision of timely feedback. Effective
communication of goals and expectations helps employees know exactly what they need to do,
how to do it and the time that they need to do it (Tziner & Rabenu, 2018). They can, therefore,
allocate their time to activities that lead to efficient achievement of the organization’s objectives.
Once they begin working on given tasks, it is important to regularly assess the performance of
employees to make sure that they are doing the right thing and at the right speed. Performance
assessment also provides the basis of providing employee feedback (Tziner & Rabenu, 2018).
Done at the right time and in a precise manner, feedback can help to motivate employees thus
leading to even higher productivity.
My belief in importance of effective performance appraisal is not just based on what I
have read but also what I have experienced. I worked in an organization that conducted

performance appraisal and provided feedback to employees after every two months. Employees
could then know what they were doing right and what they needed to improve on. At the end of
the year, employees who had performed well would be awarded with salary increase on their
base pay. Knowing that working hard and improving our performance rating would lead to salary
increment at the end of the years greatly motivated us to increase our productivity and
effectiveness.
