Advocacy is a key component of the work of nurses. Nurses carry out advocacy work
at both micro-social and macro-social levels. For long, I have always viewed my advocacy as
being limited to patient advocacy that includes actions such as providing patients and their
families with information to help them make informed decisions, communicating their
treatment preferences to my colleagues, and protecting them from any possible harm. When it
came to macro-social level of advocacy, I felt intimidated because I thought one needed a lot
of time, financial resources, and tremendous influence on policy-makers to achieve anything.
My awareness has, however, changed. I now believe that I can advocate at the macro-
social level just as well as I advocate at the micro-social level. By working with various
nursing associations I can advocate for patients, community, and fellow nurses at a broader
community, state, and even national level.
Apart from what I have learnt, I have also developed my own ideas about nursing
advocacy for my community in Alabama. One of these ways is participating in various
coalitions advocating for various healthcare-related issues such as improving scope of practice
of RNs and APRNs in the state. Another one is either writing to or physically meeting elected
officials to advocate for policies that improve healthcare outcomes of patients, working
conditions of nurses and other healthcare professionals, and reduction in healthcare costs.
Sharing my expertise in healthcare with policymakers at various levels of government is likely
to lead to policies that effectively address many of the problems currently experienced in
healthcare.
I, therefore, believe that I can effectively carry out advocacy work not just at the
micro-social level but also at the broader community and national level. Working together

with other nurses in various professional organizations, I can influence decision-makers to
come up with effective solutions for our healthcare problems.
