Fundamental Jazz Dance Goals

Beginning as an African American music, Jazz has evolved over the years to become a
music genre popular not just in the USA but also across the world. As jazz music has evolved so
has jazz dance. From initially using only African American dance styles, modern fundamental
jazz now incorporates dance elements drawn from multiple cultures. This is a reflection of jazz
dance’s evolution into a serious and respectable art form that requires a lot of training to master
its techniques work.

As a jazz student, my goal is to master these modern fundamental jazz dance techniques
as a first step towards becoming a great jazz dance performer. To be a successful dance
performer one needs to develop effective use of gestures, movements, and dance steps. It also
requires one to master elements of form, time, space, body balance, effort, rhythm, flexibility,
strength, and coordination. Additionally, I am aware that great fundamental jazz dance
performance requires originality, innovation, and improvisation. Thus, I just do not intend to
master taught skills but to also learn improvisation techniques during performance.

I intend to achieve these goals through a variety of means. Chief among them is
participation dancing where I hope to perfect various techniques through practice. I also intend to
learn through watching not just my teacher and fellow students but also videos of masters of the
art both online and offline. Additionally, I hope to improve my skills through supporting and
being supported by classmates. I believe that learning and practicing together is the fastest and
most effective way of gaining proficiency in fundamental jazz dance. Thus, I hope that the class
environment will be one that fosters commitment to group and collaborative
