The authors examine the treatment options available for people with alcohol
problems. Most people seek treatment for alcohol-related problems at a late stage. The
behavior of seeking treatment at a late stage in life is associated with a lack of
motivation as well as feelings of shame. The study attempts to examine the
effectiveness of the Swedish National Alcohol Helpline. The study findings indicate
that the use of alcohol in patients who participated in the Swedish National Alcohol
Helpline reduced significantly. This article is relevant to my research since it explains
how telephone calls can help my client to adopt a behavioral change in relation to an
alcohol use disorder.

Model to substance abuse: historical development and future directions. Drug and
alcohol review, 24(5), 437-448.
The transtheoretical model can be applied in predicting behavioral change in
substance use disorders. The effectiveness of the transtheoretical model has widely
been debated. The article analyzes the effectiveness of the transtheoretical model by
analyzing processes such as decisional balance and self-efficacy. The article
concludes that the transtheoretical model can be effectively used if all dimensions are
fully developed. The article is useful to my research because it explains the
application of the transtheoretical model in predicting behavioral change. My client is

battling alcohol addiction and this means that the article examines various factors that
will define whether or not my client makes the relevant behavioral changes.

intervention using the Health Belief Model in hospitalized alcohol use disorders
patients. International Journal of Caring Sciences, 7(3), 843.
Hazardous alcohol addiction is one of the problems that are experienced in the world
today. Alcohol addiction has various physical, psychological, and social
consequences. The authors examine the application of the health belief model in
analyzing alcohol use disorder and response to treatments. The study findings indicate
that the majority of the participants were able to adhere to the treatment once they
were educated. Intervention by way of improving the level of education can help
improve the ability of the patients to deal with various obstacles. The study is useful
in my research since it describes how the health belief model can be used to ensure
that my client adopts the needed behavioral change.

The authors analyzed the predictors of 3-year remission in alcohol patients. The study
was designed to analyze the difference between patients who had been treated for
alcohol use disorder and those who had not been treated. The people who had been
treated for alcohol use disorder were more likely to achieve a three-year remission
compared to individuals who had not sought help. In addition, the study indicated that
people who believed that alcohol use is a serious problem were less likely to relapse
compared to alcoholics, who did not believe that alcohol use is a serious problem. The

study is useful to my study since my client needs to ensure that they do not relapse
after the treatment. The only way this can be achieved in ensuring that the beliefs are
changed.

temptation: The interaction of external and internal control on alcohol use during
residential treatment for alcohol use disorder. Alcoholism: Clinical and experimental
research, 39(11), 2209-2214.
Patients who are being treated for alcohol use disorder may continue drinking as the
treatment program progresses. The behavior is attributed to beliefs and self-efficacy.
The external control mechanisms also play a role in defining whether or not the
patient continues to abuse alcohol. The article describes a study designed to evaluate
internal and external controlling mechanisms. The findings indicate that a high
internal control complemented by external control by the healthcare members in
charge of the treatment program can help reduce alcohol intake by the patient during
the treatment program. The study concludes that external control can help ensure that
patients adhere to a program. The study is useful to my research since my client’s
avatar is dealing with serious problems related to alcohol addiction. Internal and
external control thus help in predicting whether my client will adopt the much-needed
behavioral change.
