To start, you canVarious leadership styles dictate how an individual handles different scenarios. An
analysis of the scenario reveals that John is an autocratic leader, while John’s leadership style
is democratic. John’s leadership style is characterized by reluctance to take risks. John is also
not concerned with the issues that employees might face. According to him, issues that
employees face have no direct bearing on the performance of the company as a whole. On the
other hand, Shawn is concerned about the welfare of the employees. Shawn believes in
motivating employees as a way of ensuring that there is an improvement in the overall
morale.
What are the Pros and Cons of Each Style?
One main advantage associated with John’s autocratic leadership style is the fact that
it enables the leader to make fast decisions. Since the leader is not consulting with the
employees, they are able to make timely decisions. Another advantage is the fact that it helps
the improvement of productivity when decisions have to be made fast. However, it suffers
from various disadvantages (Eagly & Johannesen‐Schmidt, 2001). The leader is often
distanced from the subordinates. The leader is thus unable to respond to the issues that they
may be facing. The culture in the workplace is founded on the leader, and this may create a
disconnect between the leader and other employees.
Democratic leadership is advantageous because it ensures that multiple viewpoints are
brought to the table. Democratic leadership also ensures that problems are solved in an
efficient and effective manner. Democratic leadership ensures that team relationships are
built effectively (Eagly & Johannesen‐Schmidt, 2001). All team members work the
Democratic leadership style is associated with delays in decision making. A democratic
leader also has a problem putting many viewpoints into consideration.
What is your own leadership style? During the briefing, how will you use your
leadership style to illustrate the intrinsic value of human capital?
I share the same leadership style as Shawn. I believe that the welfare of the employees
affects the performance of employees. I will ensure that I capture the needs of the workforce
and work together with the employees to better the workplace environment and improve
productivity.
What human capital management strategies will you recommend to John and the board
of directors? What examples from other organizations can you provide to strengthen
the board’s knowledge of global human capital trends and problems?
Human capital management strategies are all about ensuring that employees are
highly productive in the workplace. I will encourage the company to ensure that it improves
employee retention. Higher employee retention will promote high levels of productivity in
the workplace. I will also encourage the company to ensure that the employees are rewarded
for their hard work.
