Discuss the structure and function of the shoulder girdle and shoulder joint and how your
selected activity impacts that functioning.
The shoulder allows the hand to move, and this helps one to accomplish various
activities. Movement occurs at the shoulder complex. The shoulder complex consists of the
scapula, ribcage, clavicle, and sternum (Lippert, 2017). The shoulder girdle is the term used
to describe the activities of the scapula and clavicle. Five muscles are attached to the scapula,
and these muscles help guarantee shoulder motion. The shoulder joint constitutes of scapula
and humerus. The shoulder joint is mobile and is associated with motions such as flexion,
extension, and hyperextension.
I selected tennis for this discussion. One of the common tennis-related injuries is
rotator cuff tear. When one is playing tennis, the arm is kept in the shoulder socket by the
rotator cuff. When playing tennis, one puts a significant amount of pressure on these muscles.
Tennis participants often participate past the fifth decade of life, and this leaves them to be
prone to injuries of the rotator cuff (Sonnery-Cottet et al., 2002). The rotator cuff plays the
role of attaching the humerus to the shoulder blade, and this helps a tennis player to lift and
rotate their arms. One of the activities involved in playing tennis is serving. When players
serve, tennis players place a huge amount of pressure on their rotator cuff. One may thus
sustain tears, strains, and sprains.
Explain how the trunk is relevant in the movement of the shoulder in general and specific to
your selected activity.
The trunk plays a central role in the movement of the shoulders. Shoulder muscles
originate from the trunk. Both the neck and the shoulders connect closely to the trunk. One of
the activities in tennis is serving. Serving is seen as one of the most important activities in
tennis. Lower limbs play a central role when one is serving. Lower limb drive, pelvis motion,

and trunk rotation are important when one is serving the ball (Sweeney, Reid, & Elliott,
2012). Trunk rotation plays an important role in high-performance serving. In developing
high racquet velocities, coaches often advise the players to rotate their trunk. Trunk rotation
is one of the defining factors of the velocity of the serve.
