Task
The learners will read the texts and identify virtues learned from each article. The objective of
the jigsaw task will be to build reading and learners’ communication skills and help them build
cooperative learning skills.
Instructions for the Jigsaw Activity

  1. Have the learners sit in groups of three.
  2. Assign each learner in each group a text to read. Learners in one group will each have a
    different text to read.
  3. Create “expert” groups. Assign tags to the groups for each text and ask students reading the
    same text to sit in similar groups. The aim is to have students in one expert group read the same
    selection.
  4. Provide each expert group with a list of comprehension questions to answer. Questions should
    be specific to the different texts for each group.
  5. Learners will read the text and brainstorm ideas as they discuss appropriate answers for the
    questions provided. Allocate time for each group to complete the assigned task.

  1. After all the students have completed the task, they should go back to their original jigsaw
    groups. Each group will have three members who are “experts” in the three different texts.
  2. Each jigsaw group member will take turns sharing their responses to the comprehension
    questions related to the texts they were reading. Students will not read the text aloud. However,
    each will discuss the answers to the different questions they were handling in the expert group.
  3. By the end of the jigsaw activity, each student will have answers to all the comprehension
    questions for all three texts, even though each had to read only one text.
    Description of Learners Details
    The above activity is for 3 rd -grade learners. Students’ age ranges from eight to nine years. They
    have varying levels of language proficiency. Most of them are at the proficient level and possess
    advanced language skills for their age; a few are second language learners. All students,
    however, can communicate well in English. Learners generally show interest in reading
    comprehension passages.
