different. The tone of the mainstream media is positive because it explains ways in which social
media can be used to appreciate LGBTQ children who often feel out of place in society
(Leventry, 2019). Notably, social media platforms often encourage transgender people and queer
individuals that they are not alone, and thus they should not be worried about their sexual
orientation. On the other hand, the tone of the gay-targeted media is negative as it explains how a
mother and her girlfriend starved their children to death (Advocate., 2022). The ordeal the
children went through is unpleasant, which is why a negative tone is used.
As much as mainstream media and gay-targeted media may have different tones, the
sources of information are often similar. Both types of media may obtain information from
television and online sites. It is vital to acknowledge that television and online sites offer
numerous topics for discussion for both media types.
The fault lines in mainstream media are evident as many individuals present different
opinions about how social media can help LGBTQ children be appreciated in society (Leventry,
2019). On the other hand, there are minimal fault lines in the gay-targeted media because most
opinions are similar as a majority of the people believe the gay parents neglected their children.
Notably, mainstream media has a great privilege at work as it talks about numerous issues, while
the privilege at work is limited for gay-targeted media. As a communication professional, the
exercise has helped me understand the differences that exist between mainstream media and gay-
targeted media. Additionally, I have learned that the tone used in both types of media differs
depending topic of discussion.
