Communication

I am one of the most industrious, fast and quick-thinking employees at my workplace
setting. One day when engaging my colleague Sam, there was a situation whereby the
information did not cohesively be conveyed. This was because my fellow employee did not
comprehend what I was discussing as my verbal communication was too fast. In addition, I
relayed too many details on the departmental matter of discussion that left them completely
disoriented. Essentially, my verbal communication was a significant problem because it created a
barrier between me and Sam. This was due to my fast speaking approach and the dispatching of
excessive details that further derailed him and prevented him from contributing in the discussion.
On the other hand, my non-verbal communication was a notable barrier that prevented
effective engagement between me and Sam. This is because my body language and facial
expressions indicated that I was not open to their input in the conversation. Eventually, the
approach made him feel uninvited and undervalued in discussing the matter at hand. This was
significant in further contributing to the overall communication breakdown. Moreover, I may
have been increasingly focused on my concepts thus not paying enough attention to Sam, which
could have been interpreted as dismissive. Notably, there are a few strategies that I could have
employed to enhance communication between my fellow colleague and I. I could have spoken
more clearly, slowly and provide an accommodative amount of information. Additionally, I
could have embraced more appreciative and inviting body language and facial expressions that
would allow me to actively listen to Sam’s contribution. One non-verbal communication I
missed during the encounter was when he frequently tried lift his hand up to mention something
and I brushed him off. Overall, the impact of my communication was that it caused an adverse
breakdown in communication and prevented Sam from contributing in the conversation.
