The Native People of Louisiana

The American Native occupied Louisiana at least 10,000 years before the European
invasion. One of the prominent colonists’ names included Antoine Simon Le Page du Pratz,
who by observing the Chitimacha and Natchez tribes between 1718 and 1734, created
drawings, and writings about these people. The Natchez tribe developed a commercial
relationship with the French trading in commodities like blankets and guns near River
Mississippi. The Natchez believed that they had traded a part of them for their products. The
Caddo tribe lived along the Red River and the Caddo Lake is named after them (Urban).
The Caddo people were traders exchanging salt for horses, which they used for
hunting. Meanwhile, the Chitimacha tribe lived in the Bayou Teche villages around 500 AD.
This tribe marked their occasions with dances and music, which lasted for days. Aside from
an epidemic, the Chitimacha revolted against the French reducing their numbers rapidly. On
the other hand, the Choctaw were the second-largest tribe before the European invasion
occupying the regions of modern-day Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The
rivalry between the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes forced them to choose sides, where the
Chickasaw chose the French and the Choctaw selected the British increasing conflict. After
ceding their territory to the US in the 1830s, the Choctaw now live on reservations in
Mississippi and Oklahoma (Urban).

Surname 2
The Houma lived along the Mississippi river but after they conflicted with the
Tunica, they left their settlement and lived in the Bayou St. John near Orleans. The Tunica
settled in the Mississippi and moved to Louisiana after the Chickasaw tribe invaded their
territory. These people were excellent in trading and settled near waterways that gave them
the way to long distances.

The Natchez tribal chiefs above believed that their trading with the French removed a part of
who they were in exchange for their products including corn, fish, and game.

The Caddo tribe above were traders who exchanged salt for horses. They used the horses for
hunting and trade.

The Chitimacha tribe above developed dances and music relating to essential occasions.
People from various villages came together for the festivals that lasted for days.

Presently, the Choctaw live on reservations in Mississippi and Oklahoma.
