A critical Analysis of Steve Job’s commencement speech

Steve Job’s commencement speech is important in helping the audience and readers
identify and make the right choices regarding what they love to do. Jobs has described the
lessons he learned from his own life and how the lessons helped him to become successful. He
describes how he dropped out of college and how this decision allowed him to attend calligraphy
classes (Nur, 2016) . The skill became applicable ten years later when designing the first
Macintosh computer. Steve Job talks about love and loss and death. Steve Job was fired from
Apple, a company he co-founded with Woz, and his cancer diagnosis. Despite the difficulties in
these stories, Steve Jobs continued to move on and do the things that he loved.
Steve Job’s commencement speech is logically structured because it has five main parts.
The five parts have improved the clarity of his thought systematically. The speech’s introductory
part evoked the graduate’s interest in the discussed topic (Heracleous, 2017) . Steve Job began his
speech by stating that he had never graduated from college and that being in that ceremony at
Stanford University was the closest he got to college graduation. The body of the speech has
three stories where Steve Job argues about the importance and necessity of doing what one loves.
The conclusion focused on the need to always be in search of something.
The powerful moments include when he designed the first Macintosh computer with
beautiful topography (Nur, 2016) . The other moment is when he could start again after being
fired from Apple. He started NeXT and Pixar, which created the first computer-animated film.
Finally, having gone through the cancer ordeal, he realized that time is limited and that one
should follow their heart and intuition.
