To start, you canIn the popular tv series Naruto In japan is known for it’s intriguing storyline and morals,
and combines the Japanese culture with Hinduism. Interestingly enough the anime itself is
based heavily around hindu religion despite it being a Japanese anime.
The anime is created by masashi Kishimoto and tells a story about a young ninja named
“Naruto Uzamaki” who attempt to gain recognition from his peers. It takes place within a small
place called the “Leaf Village” which is where Naruto lives. Naruto has three parts the show,
each part which is about a different part within his life. For instance, the first season is all about
the main character Naruto’s childhood. Its emphasized how he is looked down upon by the
villagers because he is the host to a nine tailed demon fox that is sealed within him. He attends
a ninja academy in attempt to gain recognition from others by becoming a strong ninja. Naruto
becomes friends with classmate “Sasuke Uchiha” who then goes rogue at the end of the season
seeking revenge. Then the next season “Naruto Shippuden” picks up where “Naruto” left off.
Shippuden is about naruto’s teenage year and his quest to bring his rogue friend back to the
village, which eventually leads to a third great ninja war.
Kishimoto references to Hindu relgion in many ways in the anime. For example, the
whole Naruto universe revolves around this idea of “chakra” similar to hindu myth, which is
essentially like the life source of the individual. Furthermore, the main character Naruto and
Sasuke are a embodiemtn of the two brothers Indra and Ashura”. Kishimoto also integrates
hindu aesthetics into the character design as well. For example, the design of a villain “Deidara”
bird the C4 Garuda is inspired from the Garuda is a large mythical bird that was the mount of
the Lord Vishnu.
So, from the big picture the anime is about trying to achieve world peace in a world
where all five nations are currently in war. Kishimoto places a lot of emphasis on the rivalry or
clash between Ashura and Indra throughout the series. The origin begins with the founder of
ninshu. He helped spread chakra through out earth and invented ninjustsu, which is what the
ninjas for offensive or defensive techinique. He’s is the father of Ashura and indra. The two
brother eventually go separate paths because their idea for world peace differed. The older
brother Indra is portrayed as the more superior character because he is borned with more
talent. On the other hand Ashura is the opposite where he is not born gfted and is seen as a
clumsy dropoiut. So where the two brothers’ path diverged was when indra though the only
way to obtain peace and control was through power. This led to Hagoromo( Sage of six path)
crowning Ashura as the successor as the leader. This enraged Indra and cause him to flee from
the house. On the night of Ashura coronation Indra attacked the village out of disdain for his
family. Ashura was able to hold off his brother’s attack until he use “ Susanoo” which
overpowered him. Then with the support of his father and the village, Ashura was able to use
wood realease to summon “Senju Kannon” to defeat Indra and his Susanoo.
So there is a strong conncection to the hindu muth of Ashura and Indra here. In the
hindu muth Ashura were a member of a class of divine beings in the Vedic period, which in
Indian mythology tend to be evil and Indra is the leader of the Gods and the lord of heaven.
This related closely to how author Ksihimoto portrays the character Ashura as the more inferior
character because based on the myth, Ashura is belowe indra.
