Academic and Career Goals

I am currently pursuing a degree in medical management. This is the first step in
preparation for a career in health care administration. Healthcare administrators combine
knowledge and experience in both healthcare and business to help healthcare organizations to
provide the best quality of services possible while simultaneously ensuring that the
organizations achieve their business objective of making profit.

Academic goal

After my bachelor’s degree, I intend to get an entry-level job and work for a year
before pursuing a master’s degree in health administration. My motivation to pursue a
master’s degree in health administration is extrinsic. Having a master’s degree opens up
many more opportunities for well-paying jobs in health administration than just a bachelor’s
degree. Additionally, a master’s degree is required for top level jobs in health administration.
I believe that having such extrinsic motivation will help, rather than hinder, the attainment of
my goal. With a clear goal that I am pursuing, I will be able to better organize myself and
focus all of my energies on the goal that I am pursuing.

Career goals

My career goal is to become a nursing home administrator. To lay the groundwork for
this goal, it is important that I start bridging the gap between academic theory and practical
application early. To this end, I intend to get an entry-level job or a one-year administrative
residency in healthcare facility immediately after I complete my bachelor’s degree. Such
work will provide me with the exposure and experience in healthcare organizations that I
need to have a successful career in healthcare administration. The experience will also allow

me to sharpen my leadership skills which are needed for top-level jobs in health care
administration. My motivation in becoming a nursing home administrator is extrinsic. I
decided that I wanted to be a nursing home administrator after visiting my grandmother, who
lived in a nursing home, and not being impressed by the conditions of the home. It is then that
I developed the goal of choosing a career that would enable me ensure that senior citizens
live in facilities that are safe, well-managed, and provide the highest quality of services. I
believe that the extrinsic motivation will not hinder the attainment of my goal as it will push
me to strive until I achieve what I have always dreamt of. Thus, there is no need to change
my attitude towards my career goal.
