Advantages Associated with Nonverbal Communication

There are several advantages associated with nonverbal communication. One of the major
advantages of nonverbal communication is that it reinforces the message that is being conveyed.
The use of nonverbal cues helps complement the message that is being passed out verbally
(Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd, 2016). In some instances, nonverbal communication can be a
substitute for verbal communication. In so doing, verbal communication makes the
communication process easier and helps individuals achieve the goals of communication with
ease. One can nod instead of saying yes and, in so doing, pass the message with ease. The use of
gestures and facial expressions helps in instances where there is a language barrier. Where there is
a language barrier, it is difficult to communicate using verbal communication (Burgoon,
Guerrero & Floyd, 2016). Nonverbal communication helps individuals to achieve the goals of
communication without the use of verbal messages. Nonverbal communication is also useful in
handicapped people. Deaf people can exchange messages through the use of nonverbal
communication.
Nonverbal communication suffers from various drawbacks. It is vague and lacks
precision. When communicating using nonverbal communication, there lacks the desired level of
clarity. Certain nonverbal cues do not have a universally accepted meaning. To this end, the use
of nonverbal communication may be coupled with misunderstanding (Burgoon, Guerrero &
Floyd, 2016). Meanings of certain cues depend on the cultural background of the individuals
concerned. What is acceptable in one culture may be offensive in another culture. Nonverbal
communication relies on multiple channels that create confusion. A person who is using
nonverbal cues may be doing so using facial expressions, gestures, and body language. It
becomes difficult for the recipient to observe all nonverbal cues. Nonverbal communication is

difficult to interpret (Burgoon, Guerrero & Floyd, 2016). Misinterpretation and lack of sufficient
knowledge on how to interpret certain cues can hinder the communication process.
