Chart 1. Apple’s organizational structure
Apple Inc.’s organizational structure can be defined as hierarchical, with a mixture of
functional and product-based groupings. Authority in the organization is defined from higher
hierarchies to lower ones and subordinates. In a nutshell, the organization is headed by the CEO,
Tim Cook. Under the CEO are worldwide senior vice presidents heading various departments,
including retail, design, engineering, finance, and retail, who address business needs in the
functional units (Apple, n.d). The company also has a product-based grouping which vice
presidents head. These product managers report to both senior vice presidents and the CEO.
Under product managers are junior managers and subordinates. There is an intensive
collaboration between various groups and divisions to enhance creative and efficient innovation.
For Apple to start manufacturing Mac televisions, various departments must work
together. Design is the first rudimentary department that I envision. This department will be
3
tasked with designing television screens. Designing requires collaboration between various
engineers, such as audio, plastics, fiber optic, and electronic engineers (Center, n.d). Apple’s
design department develops screen prototypes for its products, such as laptops. However, it may
need to hire experts to design television sets. The other major department I envision is
production. Since it is a new product, a new product division, namely the Television Department,
must be established. The TV product manager will head it. The manager will collaborate with the
design department to develop a meaningful product for users. The marketing department is
equally crucial as it will help introduce the product to the market. The company may use the
existing marketing department to conduct customer reviews and preferences, competition, and
market prices.
To drive this project, Apple will need substantial capital investment. It will need
substantial money to hire experts who will focus on designing, producing, and marketing
televisions. It will also require funds to source raw materials needed for production and build a
new manufacturing plant. This may translate to billions of dollars. In the short run, the
production of the new product will eat into the company’s profits, meaning that outsourcing
production is a viable alternative. The company can then consider in-house production in the
future when the product has established itself in the market.
