defined as all things that exist in nature. The natural world includes animals and plants. One
distinguishing feature of the things that are included in the natural world is that they are not
made by human beings. Natural world includes the biological life and the environment that
surrounds the biological life. Science explores the physical universe that surrounds human beings
and the natural forces that have an impact on the physical world. Studying the natural world is
important since it helps in gaining insights into natural processes. The study of the natural world
also enables individuals to understand the relationship between living things and the
environment. Through the study of the natural world, scientists can provide solutions to some
problems that are present in the world. Science is about solutions, and solutions can only be
found through exploring the natural world. The study of the natural world also satisfies the
curiosity of mankind. Questions that seem unanswered are solved through the study of the
natural world.
There are various characteristics that all livings share. One characteristic is cellular
organization. All living things are characterized by cells. Cells are the building blocks of living
things. All living things reproduce, and this means that they have the capability of bringing to
life other living things. Reproduction in living things is both sexual and asexual. Reproduction
enables living things to pass genetic information to their offspring. All living things have the
ability to excrete and in so doing, eliminate wastes. Living things maintain a stable internal
environment through homeostasis. Another characteristic of living things is respiration. All
living things process food and release energy that is used to perform various activities. All living
things possess the ability to move. Animals have the ability to move from one place to the other

while plants move in search of sunlight. Living things have the ability to grow. In addition, all
living things have the ability to sense and respond to stimuli. Stimuli may include light, water,
and gravity. Living things have the unique ability to detect changes in the environment that
surrounds them. Living things react to both internal and external factors.
There are many key figures that have made their invaluable contribution to biological
sciences. One key figure is Aristotle, who is famous for his contribution to the classification of
living things. Another famous figure in biological sciences is Galen. Although he was inclined to
physical sciences, he was influential in the study of medicine. He contributed immensely to
medical research and was involved in the creation of different fields of medicine including
physiology and neurology. William Harvey made a contribution to biology by describing the
circulatory system. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a key figure in the field of microbiology. He
is regarded by many as the father of microbiology. Another key figure is Theodor Schwann who
contributed immensely into the advancement of cell theory.
