Complex Problem Solving Skills

We are always solving problems. Some of the problems are mundane and are often
solved without us being consciously aware of them while others are more complex. Since
complex problems are commonplace in our workplaces and have a major impact on the ability of
the organization to achieve its objectives, it is important that everyone at the workplace have
effective complex solving skills.
Contrary to popular opinion, you do not need high intelligence to become effective at
complex problem solving. It is a skill that one can develop through practice and acquisition of
knowledge. Good complex problem solvers have adequate social, emotional, and cognitive
resources in addition to extensive knowledge. These skills and qualities can be acquired through
practice either formally or informally.
Formally, complex problem solving skills development can be done through gaining
more knowledge. By learning more, one gains vast knowledge that helps them be more effective
at solving problems. Additionally, one learns multiple models for problem solving which they
can use in complex problem solving. Such models are particularly useful in solving problems
where there are multiple possibilities.
Informally, complex problem solving skills can be developed through learning how to
brainstorm. This is the practice of getting a group of employees to discuss a problem and
examine available solutions. All possible solutions are discussed and the optimum one settled on.
Brainstorming allows use of knowledge and experiences of different people to solve problems.
One can also learn a lot informally by just participating in multiple brainstorming sessions.
Complex problem solving skills can also be developed informally through trial and error. This

approach involves testing different solutions either simultaneously or at different times until a
solution is found. Done multiple times, one can become proficient in complex problem solving
through trial and error.
