Disaster Mitigation Activities

Mitigation activities are activities that are done with the goal of either eliminating or
reducing risks to both people and property from both natural and artificial hazards as well as the
impacts of those hazards. Knowing the importance of effectively preparing for hazards, my
community has been engaged in a number of mitigation activities against disasters. These
activities have mostly been spearheaded by the local authorities.
The most important of these activities has been passing of various regulations and plans
that touch on our community’s development. These plans and regulations have been established
after carefully assessing current development trends and patterns in addition to determining areas
where the community’s future development is likely to take place. The plans and regulations
stipulate areas where future development should occur and areas where such kind of
development cannot occur. The stipulations ban development in areas that are prone to natural
disasters, such as floods. Instead of such areas, the regulations seek to have future developments
take place in higher altitude areas where the risk of flooding is low.
Apart from determining where future development projects should take place, local
authorities have also been active in transferring critical infrastructure from places that are prone
to disasters to places that are relatively safe. For instance, they have been moving sewer and
water lines away from areas that are likely to be flooded to areas that are less likely to be
flooded. Such measures ensure that people will continue having access to important facilities
even when natural disasters occur. The activities that have been taken in my community,
therefore, will ensure that any time a disaster occurs, loss of life and property will be
significantly reduced or eliminated altogether.
