Forms of contraception

Depo-Provera is a form of contraception done though an injection that prevents
pregnancy for a period of eleven to thirteen weeks. Its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy is
99.7 percent. It is effective and reversible. It does not contain estrogen and is good for people
who are allergic to the component. It contains medroxyprogesterone, and some people are
allergic to it. It may cause a delay in pregnancy and may take up to ten months to get pregnant
after stopping Depo-Provera (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020b). It can be used
by breastfeeding women. It does not protect a woman from contracting sexually transmitted
infections. It may also affect bone mineral density. Some of its other side effects include weight
gain, nausea, headache, dizziness, irregular periods, depression, and dizziness. It causes
irregular bleeding, and most women stop using it in their first year of use. It is approved in the
treatment of endometriosis pain (Medscape, 2020). The cost of getting the injection may range
from $50-$95.
The intrauterine device (IUD), on the other hand, is a long-acting reversible contraceptive
that is inserted in the woman’s uterus. It is more than 99 percent effective and works for up to ten
years. It can either be hormonal or non-hormonal. It might cause changes in periods for some
women. Insertion in women post-partum is safe (Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
2020). the periods might be more painful, heavier, and longer when using the copper IUD.
Spotting is common in some women during the first few months of use. There is a one percent
risk of infection during insertion. There is also a small risk of having the uterus damaged during
insertion; the rate is low. If one has an infection, she should first get treated before the device is
inserted. IUDs are affordable; the cost ranges from $0-$1300 (Planned Parenthood, 2020). In
some states, it is free, but in others, it is charged. It is not indicated during pregnancy, and thus

should not be sued. Lastly, there is data conflict on whether IUD causes infertility, although
studies show that the risk is minimal (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020).
