develop the skills needed to effectively carry out evidence-based practice. When searching for
information to help the nurse provide effective care to a patient, the key quality of that
information is relevance (Schaefer & Welton, 2018). Determining whether particular information
is relevant or not requires critiquing the information source. This process involves looking at the
publication date (it should be as recent as possible, preferably not more than five years old), the
sources in literature review/background should also be relatively recent, and the methodology
applied should be appropriate in addressing the paper’s research questions (Saunders &
Vehvilainen-Julkunen, 2016). Additionally, the study should clearly address its strengths and
weaknesses as well as its limitations (Saunders & Vehvilainen-Julkunen, 2016). Using these
strategies, nurses are sure to get the most relevant information that they need at given time
during their care for patients.
