Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists

Nurse informaticists and technology specialists interact with other professionals within
my healthcare organization to ensure the delivery of quality and timely care to patients. The use
of specific resources such as Nursing Reference Center Plus provides the nurse with easy and
quick access to a wide variety of trusted information and educational tools. Consequently, the
nurse’s efficiency and skills are enhanced, thus making it easy for clinicians and other medical
assistants to collaborate with nurses. The wide array of information that nurses have access to,
and this makes it easier for them to collaborate with clinicians, as informatics simplify
communication (Carayon et al., 2019). Through the use of new technology, nurses can send
instant emails and texts. Clinician-nurse communication is more comfortable and faster now than
before. Also, I have observed that charting through electronic health records (EHR) has been
effective in protecting the care provided by nurses, as records are used if the care is ever
questioned. I work at an organization where the EHR is well-designed and thus makes it easy for
the nurse to search for information about a patient, chart comprehensively, and answer any
questions that they could be having. Consequently, the clinician can spend more time with the
patient, as opposed to with the nurse.
Informatics has changed the provision of care for nurses and other practitioners in the
medical field. The nursing profession is rapidly evolving, and I feel that advancements need to
be made in full knowledge of the changes taking place in the nursing field. One of the strategies
that I think should be implemented is the involvement of nurses in coming up with new
technology for their use. As direct caregivers, nurses should be at the front line in coming up
with technology that will impact their practice directly. For instance, with the rising demand for
care, data could be used to make work easier for nurses. Through wearable technologies, patients

can be monitored from home and are only taken to the hospital when necessary (Collins, 2019).
Nurses are well informed on what care entails, and should thus be involved in making
technological decisions and advancements as this will directly impact on their roles.
Additionally, through the use of mobile health devices, nursing care is easily dispensed to more
patients. One nurse can be taking care of several patients from their homes, through checking on
them and giving them instructions on what to do through the mobile health devices (Collins,
2019).
The continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty and the continued
emergence of new technologies have an impact on professional interactions. There is an
improvement in clinical procedures, protocols, policies, and processes. Data is the backbone of
nursing informaticist. A nurse informaticist can use data to measure the success of processes,
procedures, and protocols within a healthcare organization. Also, this specialist can analyze and
measure the performance of different sectors, with the main focus being patient outcomes. The
evolution of nursing informatics has helped a great way in reducing errors within the healthcare
sector, consequently reducing error-related costs (Kumari, 2019). The involvement of nursing
informaticists in the selection and testing of new medical devices has helped ensure that nurses
understand how device data inform treatment plans and patient outcomes. The interaction
between different professionals has greatly improved with the continuous emergence of new
technologies.
