Interpretive Summary

A critical examination of the short story, Color and Light, indicates that it mainly talks
about two individuals, Aidan and Pauline. At the start of the story, Aidan meets with Pauline,
and an attraction develops between them. Notably, from the attraction, it is evident that they
liked each other. The two characters both work in the same hotel, and this makes it easy for them
to see each other regularly (The New Yorker). Also, the story talks about the various instances
when Aidan and Pauline meet, especially after work. It is vital to acknowledge that their
meetings increase their bond together, especially at night. The author of the short story helps us
understand that the connection between Aidan and Pauline is natural, and human beings should
strive to make such connections with each other.
Also, the story helps enlighten the audience about the essence of having private meetings
free from interference by other people. The two characters often spend much time together at
night, and it is evident the meetings are fruitful because their bond continues to grow stronger
(The New Yorker). The author emphasizes that people can form human connections from
different cultural backgrounds, just like Aidan and Pauline have done so.
The information provided in the short story is meaningful due to many reasons. One of
the reasons is that it helps the audience to understand all human beings can form connections
regardless of their gender and race. Also, the story explains that for human connections to grow stronger, there is a dire need to create time for each other, as this is evident in the story. The
other reason the short story is meaningful is that it explains that human beings cannot exist alone.
