Grade Level
This lesson plan is designed for learners in the 11 th grade because by this stage; students need
to be able to independently read literary texts and explain the author’s central ideas. It is a
build-up from the previous lesson, where students were introduced to the text that they will be
reading and instructions given on how to go through the process. Thus, the lesson will be
instrumental in inculcating a culture of purposeful reading among the students.
Instructional Model
Direct Instruction
The teacher will instruct the students on how to identify motifs in the novel and how to
use them to establish the central ideas.
The teacher will explain how the author uses characters to bring out the main ideas and
guide students on things to look out for to be able to get the author’s main themes
The teacher will explain to the learners how and where to access the online materials
using their tablets.
Independent Study
Students will be guided on how to independently identify central ideas in different
chapters in the book.
They will be supervised by the teacher as they carry out discussions in small groups
about the main themes in The Handmaid’s Tale.
They will fill in worksheets and complete assignments issued by the teacher
independently during the lesson and some after the lesson either on their own or within
their group discussions

throughout the text. Include how these themes interact with each other to create a complex
plot. Give a summary of the novel.
11.2 is asking the learners to identify the main theme in the novel and break it down by
explaining how different chapters support it. Students will do this by analyzing relationships
between characters, the setting of the novel as well as the plot developed by the author.
Mastery of this standard will e achieved if the students can identify the central idea in the text
accurately.

ASSESSMENT PLAN
Formative Assessments
Students will complete exercises individually, which will be submitted to the teacher to
evaluate the learners’ interpretation of the text.
Students will complete some worksheets in their small groups and then present their
findings in class through presentations.
After reading each chapter, students will be asked oral questions, which the teacher
will then use to gauge their level of understanding depending on the responses
The teacher will use Educreations Interactive Whiteboard to evaluate learners during
the lesson
Some of the questions will require learners to;
Explain how they identified the central idea by providing textual
evidence to support their answers
Identify ways through which the author developed the central
idea in different chapters within the book
Summative Assessments
The teacher will grade students’ worksheets that will be based on questions derived
from the novel
The worksheets and assignments will show the learners’ level of understanding of the
novel
Students will do a thematic analysis of the novel

the classroom that will require support. Students will be shown how to use interactive
study aids for themselves. They will be allowed to come up with their own
individualized lists of terms as some may need to learn words that their classmates are
already familiar with.
Students will be given practice tests before the lesson so that they can first get used to
the required format before completing the real ones
Enrichments
The gifted students in the class will have their thinking enriched through increasing the
complexity of their materials during class. The teacher will select advance materials
for them and give them similar worksheets with the rest of the class but ensuring that
theirs have extra critical-thinking questions.
Curriculum acceleration is another way to enrich their thinking (Gollan-Wills, 2014).
They will be instructed to direct their learning process through independently working
ahead to solve questions in chapters yet to be covered in class.
They will be taught research skills and how to use their tablets to access more
