Know
The achievement of objectives under this section will help the learners be in a better position
to analyze a text. They will provide a foundation for textual analysis. For instance, knowing the
impact of the point of view on the story will help the learner differentiate P.O.V s in different
text and how they affect the structure and style adopted by the author. Further, learner’s
knowledge of the authors choice of words and phrases including word relationships, figurative
language and nuances will help them to better understand the impact of the story on its intended
audience as well as the purpose of the author.
Understand
When learners achieve the objectives in this segment, they will be better placed to analyze
texts better. Learners’ understanding the author’s choice of language, organizational pattern, and
literary techniques will enable them to comprehend how these elements are influenced by the
purpose of the author as well as the target audience. Further, students will be able to carry out
effective textual analysis requires and a skillful interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis
of information are necessary for proper textual analysis. Possession of these abilities is necessary
for textual analysis.

The ability of the learners to analyze the impact that different readers, target audiences or
points of view affect the authors use of motifs and consequent expression of the central ideas in a
text is instrumental in understanding how to analyze a text effectively. A student who can
analyze differences in text structure and how they affect its style and meaning by comparing and
contrasting structures used by two or more authors in different texts is able to understand
different texts even without the assistance of the teacher. Overall, the students will have mastered
textual analysis if they can demonstrate a deep comprehension of word relationships, figurative
language, and the nuances in word meanings, clarify the meaning of words and phrases used by
the author in the text as well as establish the point of view in a text.
