To start, you canI want to bring to your attention the sudden death of a patient in one of our wards today.
Information reaching my desk alleges that the potential cause of the death might have
been malpractice by one of our nurses. Therefore, my office plans to launch an inquiry
soon to get to the root of this issue. All staff members present today at the scene or
involved in one way or the other during the shift must be prepared to give statements on
what transpired. If necessary, all staff members will be questioned by the investigating
committee. My request is for everyone to provide their maximum cooperation when
requested.
A transformation leadership model is ideal for this situation to encourage and inspire
team members to give honest answers and participate freely during the investigation.
Honesty is key to mapping the events that led to the patient’s demise (Collins et al.,
2020). A transformation leadership approach paves the way for collaborative decision-
making and sharing of information, which is critical to the investigation’s success and,
later on, the case’s determination. We need to collect accurate facts from all witnesses
and everyone on duty to give justice to the patient’s family.
As nurse managers, it is necessary to coach and train all junior nurses about ethical and
professional principles guiding the nursing practice. It would be best if you consistently
upheld certain competencies, attributes, and qualities (such as following standard clinical
procedures) to guarantee patients under your care receive quality and safe medical
services. According to Wiess, Tappen, & Grimley (2019), nurse managers must serve
with integrity by adhering to ethical codes, such as confidentiality, autonomy,
beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Equally, you must demonstrate other skills
like conflict resolution, good communication, problem-solving, courage, and
collaboration to work with teams effectively. Since nurses often work under stressful
conditions, nurse managers must make an effort to significantly lower burnout and stress
that might compromise the delivery of quality services. I am convinced that giving
timely, quality, and constructive feedback to your team members will prevent future
instances of misunderstanding, errors, and adverse patient outcomes, including patient
injuries and deaths.
You can contact me in my office if you need any clarification.
