Lesson Planning and State Standards

Part 1:
Math Standard
Math Standard and Grade Level:
Sixth Grade
CONTENT: WHAT
(What you want students to know through the learning objective.)
Learning objective: Students will be required to apply and make use of their knowledge of
ratios obtained in earlier grades to understand important ratio concepts. These concepts include unit
rate, equivalent ratios, and relationship between two quantities. They will also learn to use ratio
reasoning.

CRITERIA: WHY
(Why this learning is important in math.)
This learning is important because as students move to the next grade (seventh grade), they
will be required, according to South Carolina standards, to write equations that represent ratio
relationships. They will also be required to solve problems involving changes in unit rates and
percentages. For students to effectively accomplish such tasks, they will need to have had a very
strong foundation of various ratio concepts as well as ratio reasoning. Without such foundation they
are likely to have problems performing tasks for the next grade.

CRITERIA: HOW

LESSON PLANNING AND STATE STANDARDS 3
(How the students will demonstrate their knowledge.)
After teaching of the concepts, students will be required to provide solutions to problems that
are non-routine. The answers they give will have three components: the answer, a justification for the
answer, and an explanation for their thinking. Students whose solutions satisfy the three components
will be awarded a three.
Math Learning Objective:
Understand ratio concepts such as unit rate and equivalent ratio, and use ratio reasoning by
applying prior knowledge of ratios.

English Language Arts Standard

English Language Arts Standard and Grade Level:
Grade One
CONTENT: WHAT
(What you want students to know through the learning objective.)
Students will be required to recognize a sentence’s distinguishing features such as
capitalization, and sentence parts such as nouns and adjectives.

CRITERIA: WHY
(Why this learning is important in English language arts.)
As they progress to hire grades, students will increasingly be required to engage in class and
communicate through writing. They will, therefore, need to know how to write correct sentences.

LESSON PLANNING AND STATE STANDARDS 4
Understanding the concept of structure of sentences and the features that distinguish these features is
an important step towards developing ability to write correct sentences.

CRITERIA: HOW
(How the students will demonstrate their knowledge.)
Students will be given a number of sentences and required to determine whether they are
wrong or correct. They will also be required to identify the different parts of the sentences such as
verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives.
English language arts learning objective:
Lesson objective: To recognize a sentence’s distinguishing features and determine whether a
sentence is correct or wrong.

Part 2:
Deconstruct Lesson Plan
Is the lesson aligned to a standard?
The lesson’s objective is to have students apply their knowledge of fractions learnt in
previous grades to understand ratio concepts and learn ratio reasoning. This lesson is meant to
meet the goals set by South Carolina standards as expressed in 6.RP.1, 6.RP.2, and 6.RP.3.
6.RP.1 requires students to interpret the concept of ratio as being one of a relationship between
two quantities. These quantities are either part to whole or part to part. 6.RP.2 requires students
to investigate the relationship between rates and ratios. 6.RP.3, on the other hand requires
students to apply rates and ratio concepts to mathematical problems and real world problems

LESSON PLANNING AND STATE STANDARDS 5
(South Carolina Department of Education, 2015). Looking at the lessons objectives and contents,
it is clear that the lesson aligns with the South Carolina standards for grade 6 Mathematics.
Does the learning objective state what students need to know and/or do because of
instruction?
The learning objective requires students to know specified ratio concepts and develop
ratio reasoning. They are then required to use this knowledge to mathematical problems
involving ratios as well as real world problems. Thus, the learning objective tells students exactly
what they need to know. It also tells them what they need to do during the lesson in order to
achieve the lesson’s objective.
Is the content of the lesson aligned to the learning objective?
The contents of the lesson include concepts taught and problems that students are given at
the end of class. The objective is to have the students understand ratio concepts such as unit rates
and understanding ratios as a relationship between two quantities. It also requires the students to
be able to use these concepts to solve real world problems.
Regarding learning about various ratio concepts the contents of the lesson are clearly
aligned with the objectives of the lesson. For instance, regarding understanding of ratios as a
relationship between two quantities, some of the lesson’s contents require students to determine
the ratio of beaks to wings in a bird. Solving such a problem will help a student to understand
that ratios are indeed a relationship between two quantities, in this case one beak to two wings.
As for the concept of unit rate, the lesson’s content show how students, when they buy four
similar items worth $80 can express the purchase as costing $20 per item. Lastly, on developing
knowledge of rates, there are contents that teach students how to determine the various sizes of

LESSON PLANNING AND STATE STANDARDS 6
land that a person can mow in a given time if they know the size of land they can mow in an
hour. Thus, the contents are clearly aligned with the objectives of the lesson.
What changes or revisions might you make to this lesson plan to ensure its alignment to the
standard and learning objective?
The lesson is largely aligned to the learning objective and South Carolina standards. The
students are, therefore, able to get the knowledge and skills that the state standards recommend
that they should have at their grade level (Isaacson, 2017). I do not think that there are any
significant changes that should be made to the lesson to make it more aligned to the lesson
objectives and South Carolina standards. Perhaps the only addition would be to increase content
related to purely mathematical problems. The lesson is focused more on real world problems.
