To start, you canMany scientific discoveries helped ensure that the world is a better
place. One of the discoveries that has helped cure diseases is the discovery of penicillin.
Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in the year 1928 (American Chemical
Society, 2019). The discovery greatly aided in the introduction of antibiotics that would be
used in curing various infections. Fleming discovered penicillin by accident. Fleming had
come home after a holiday. He began sorting out Petri dishes that contained Staphylococcus
bacteria. The bacteria was responsible for various illnesses, including boils and sore throats.
He discovered that one dish stood out and had something unusual (American Chemical
Society, 2019). The presence of Penicillium mold was harboring the growth of the bacteria.
He then worked with his assistants in separating penicillin from the mold juice. He published
his findings through his studies were inconclusive (American Chemical Society, 2019). The
study would later be advanced by other researchers drawn from Oxford University.
In science, conclusions are drawn based on one’s observations. Scientists thus use
inference to the best explanation (Hardy, Foster, & Zúñiga y Postigo, 2015). In Fleming’s
case, he noticed that one petri dish that was containing Staphylococcus bacteria, bacteria was
not growing. He then made a conclusion that the result was because penicillin was affecting
the growth of the bacteria. The argument is strong since it uses evidence to sufficiently
support the conclusion. The argument can be weakened by supplying evidence that proves
that penicillin was not the only factor that was present in the Petri Dish.
