Part 2: Mentorship Exchange
The process of completing my C.V. helped me notice my professional qualifications and
achievements. I realized that I had done quite much in my career. I have been to several
institutions of higher learning and acquired several degrees. I have done so much in my
professional life, and for some reason, I seemed to have forgotten about some of the
qualifications. Writing down my C.V. brought all this to my attention. I reflected throughout the
process. I saw how I was able to achieve the targets and goals that I had set for myself. It was
such a refreshing experience.
Even as I acknowledged my progress, strengths, and achievements, I realized some gaps in
my professional career. For instance, I realized that I do not have any publications to my name. I
have acquired a lot of knowledge and skills, but for some reason, I have not written any journals
or articles. That gap in my CV made me think a lot about how I intend to contribute to available
literature in my field. I know publishing is not a requirement to have published content and
research before being allowed to defend my thesis. However, I feel obligated to do so as a
scholar in the field of psychology. Writing y CV helped me realize that I have ‘sat’ on my
knowledge for way too long, and it is time I share it with the world through publishing and
identifying co-authors with whom we share interests so that we can write and publish our work. I
even set a target that by the end of July 2022, I should have made at least one publication. This is
a target that I am determined to meet.
Another gap that I identified in my C.V. is on volunteer experience. I do not have much to
say about this area of my professional development because I have not done much in it either.
This gap got me thinking about the many people and organizations that could benefit from my
5
volunteering services, and I purposed to plan well and ensure that I volunteer. My schedule at the
moment is quite busy; balancing between school, work and life can be quite a lot. However, I
purposed to look for ways through which I can volunteer and positively impact my society. This
will allow me an additional opportunity to share my experiences as a psychologist and help
change lives.
After writing the C.V and identifying my accomplishments, strengths, as well as gaps, and
weaknesses, I realized that the document I wrote was not the final one. Since I will work on it
myself, I will continually fill in the gaps when I complete the required tasks. For example, I will
be able to fill in the publications gap after publishing. Additionally, once I volunteer, I will be
able to fill in that part of the C.V. It is a continuous process. It is, therefore, an active document
that will be edited at any time throughout my professional career. I am also working on y Ph.D.,
and once I complete it, I will add this information to the C.V.
The process of revision is important as it will ensure that I keep my C.V. up to date. As I go
through my career, I will gain additional skills and qualifications, and this important information
will be captured on the C.V. Besides, some of my courses are pending. They are a work in
progress. Thus, when I complete them, I will update these parts of my C.V. and show that I have
actually graduated. Revising also helps give me a modern view of my career achievements. For
instance, I am writing a CV after such a long time, and it made me realize that I have achieved
quite a lot since then. Periodically fine-tuning and editing the document will help ensure that I
have a modern up to date CV that accurately captures my achievements.
Overall, the requirements of this week’s assignment helped me go deep in thought. As I
reflected, I was able to acknowledge my progress. Looking at y accomplishments has helped me
realize why I did not quit even when it felt like the right thing to do so many times in the course
6
of my school life. I have been in school for quite a long time. Looking at the summary of what I
have achieved over the years made me appreciate my progress. Writing the C.V. and then
reflecting on it was quite an insightful experience. I also realized that I have been working at my
current organization for slightly over two decades. That is such a long time. I intend on pursuing
something else in the field of psychology. I have not yet figured out what exactly I want to do.
However, after writing the C.V., I now know that I will make a decision soon on where exactly I
want to venture into the field of psychology. Evidently, it was a very insightful experience.
