sector in general. Through the use of modern technology, efficiency in the healthcare sector has
increased. Technology has had a positive impact on patient care. One of the revolutionary
technological trends is the introduction of electronic medical records (EMR). Unlike in the past,
patient records can easily be accessed by medical practitioners. The retrieval of patient data has
substantially improved. Computer systems can store data relating to a patient’s medical history
and previous diagnosis. Electronic medical records have improved nursing practice and resulted
in positive health outcomes. In the world today, healthcare services can be delivered in a safe and
efficient manner. The paper analyzes the introduction of electronic health records and the impact
of the move on nursing practice.
Description of the Project Proposal
The project seeks to examine the need for introducing electronic health records in a
hospital setting. The introduction of electronic health records is in line with the goal of providing
accurate information about patients at the point of care. Through the implementation of
electronic health records, healthcare experts will be able to access patient records in an efficient
manner. The data on patients will also be securely shared with patients and other workers in the
hospital setting. The paperwork associated with treating patients will be significantly reduced,
and researchers will also have an easy time studying diseases and the treatment of the diseases.

2009). The management will make the decision to implement the system. The management will

the system as well as the necessary adjustments required. Nurses and other healthcare workers
will also be affected by the implementation of the project. The system will be run and operated
by healthcare workers. As a result, their input will be important in the implementation of the
project. Patients are also important stakeholders. Patients are the primary stakeholders in the
healthcare sector. Patients will have to be educated on the effectiveness of electronic health
record systems. In addition, they will be engaged in the safeguards put in place to ensure that the
data stored in the systems are secure.

Electronic health records result in complete and accurate information about patients. In so

While the initial cost of installing the systems is high, the systems are associated with minimal
maintenance costs. The low costs of maintaining the system can trickle down to patients through
reduced costs of getting healthcare services (Wang et al., 2018). Nurses can access patient data in
formats that were not possible with paper works. Nurses can view and print graphs of certain
data, including weight and blood pressure. In so doing, EHRs help in the management of chronic
illnesses.
EHRs help in improving communication between patients and medical practitioners. In
an organization, patient data is accessed by various experts. Medical notes and chart summaries
are important in the provision of medical services to patients. Patients can also access data
through portals. A patient can thus monitor their progress, and this can also empower them to
book appointments remotely.
Technologies Required to Implement the Project
Implementing an EHR system is often complex and requires ensuring that the system is
tailored to support the needs of a particular organization. One of the technologies that are
required in the implementation of the EHR system is the health IT system. EHR systems require
patient data. It is important to integrate the system into the information technology systems in the
organization (Wang et al., 2018). Integration with existing technology helps in avoiding future
problems. The organization should consider how the new system will generate new patient

Project Team and their Roles
The project will involve different professionals. The system will be managed by nurses,
physicians, and doctors. Every department in the healthcare facility will be transformed by the
implementation of the electronic health records system. The system will have to be implemented
in every department (Rajkomar et al., 2018). All departments in the organization are
interdependent. Pharmacists need to access records that are fed into the system by doctors and
physicians. The ideas of all experts in the healthcare facility will have to be combined in the
delivery of healthcare services. The healthcare facility needs to employ technicians that will be
involved in the running of the system (Cowie et al., 2017). The technicians will be tasked with
implementing the system and correcting any errors that occur during the implementation of the
system. Technicians will also help in training all the workers in the healthcare facility. During
the training phase, healthcare workers will have an opportunity to ask questions and have them
answered. The system will be acquired from a separate company, and this means that the
manufacturer will implement the system and carry out regular maintenance to ensure that it
continues to work. The manufacturer of the system will also ensure that it is customized to meet
the needs of the organization.
