repositioning system to prevent pressure ulcers: a case series. British Journal of Nursing, 27(6),

Summary

The study looked at the effectiveness of Danish automated Vendlet V5s repositioning system in
reducing musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in caregivers and pressure ulcers in patients. 13
people were used in the experiment and data collected over 4 weeks. It was found that automated
Vendlet V5s repositioning system was effective in healing pressure ulcers and reducing MSD.

existing health conditions on the cost of recovery from road traffic injury: insights from data
linkage of medicare and compensable injury claims in Victoria, Australia. BMC health services
research, 16(1), 162.

Summary

The study sought to find the cost effect of pre-existing conditions on road accident patients. It
was found that certain components of recovery increased due to services associated with pre-

existing conditions but the impact of pre-existing conditions on overall recovery cost was
insignificant.

Kennedy, B. R. (2013). Health inequalities: Promoting policy changes in utilizing transformation
development by empowering African American communities in reducing health
disparities. Journal of cultural diversity, 20(4), 155-162.

Summary

The paper looked at the impact of racism on health outcomes. It found that racism is partly to
blame for poor health outcomes of African Americans and offers suggestions on how this
inequality can be reduced.

Campesino, M. (2008). Beyond transculturalism: critiques of cultural education in
nursing. Journal of Nursing Education, 47(7), 298-304.

Summary

The study looked at the issue of training nurses that are culturally competent. It found that there
are major divisions on the best approaches to achieve the goal of having nurses that are culturally
aware of their environment.

Section 2: Statement on Importance of Research in Nursing

Critical thinking is an important skill for nurses. Through critical thinking, nurses can
identify problems within their profession, factors causing them, and possible solutions to the
problems. There are many ways in which research helps nurses become better at critically
evaluating the needs of their profession and that of nursing service consumers. Through various
studies and practices across the world, there is always emerging information on new best
practices that increase the effectiveness of nurses and improve service delivery to patients. By
conducting research, nurses manage to get acquainted with these practices that may include new
protocols for treatment and correction of previous misconceptions about certain practices.

Another importance of research is that it helps nurses to effectively respond to ever
occurring changes in the profession. These changes include government regulations, patient
demographics, and general healthcare environment. Discoveries made through new research
quickly render old information outdated thus the need for nurses to always be on the look out for
the latest information in their field.
