Organization development is a common phenomenon in many organizations. It is done
for multiple reasons. One of them is to improve an organization’s performance. The improvement
in performance is not just at the organization’s level but also at group and individual level.
Another goal for organization development is to help it better respond to changes that occur in its
external environment. In the case of public entities an example of such change may be reduced
funding. Lastly, organization development may be done to strengthen its internal capabilities.
There are many approaches that organizations can take to achieve organization
development. In the case of my organization, I believe the best approach would be team building.
Most work in my organization, like in many other organizations, is often carried out in teams or
groups. Given this reality, making such teams more effective will definitely make the
organization more effective and successful as well.
A major problem with teams at my organization is that team members are generally not
comfortable with each other. Despite working together for a considerable amount of time, team
members are still not very free with each other. Partly because of this reason, communication
with group members is often not very open as well. The result of these problems has been poor
performance of group tasks and general loss of morale.
As part of organization development approach, team building would involve getting a
facilitator to help improve the effectiveness of various teams. The facilitator’s role would be to
identify group dynamics and various elements of individual behaviors that may hinder the team
from performing as desired. The facilitators would then develop and implement strategies to
solve any problem that they may have identified. I believe that implementation of solutions to

various team problems will greatly increase the cohesiveness of the teams, their effectiveness,
and, therefore, greatly contribute to the success of the organization.
