The article explores the changing perceptions of sharks over time. In the article,
Benchley is quoted saying that his views have changed significantly since the time he
first wrote the novel Jaws. At the time, little was known about sharks, and it was believed
that they were out there to prey on humans and attack boats. However, the view has since
changed, and sharks are not as dangerous as they have always been perceived to be.
Benchley later became an advocate for shark conservation. The article will help in my
research as it shows how human attitudes towards nature have changed over time.
Phipps, Gregory. “Naturalism and Intersectionality in Peter Benchley’s Jaws.” Studies in
American Naturalism 15.1 (2020): 92-110.
Gregory examines Jaws as a descendant of naturalism. The article focuses mainly
on the tensions depicted in Benchley’s novel and how race, gender, class are portrayed.
The author explores the use of symbolism in the marauding shark and how it terrorizes
the people in Brody’s hometown. This article examines how humans relate to their
environment and the tensions that exist therein. The article will thus be a useful resource
