Politics of Angola’s Energy Economy

Aware that Angola’s energy infrastructure and development is largely dependent on external
help through companies such as Total, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and BP.
Concerned that Angola risks becoming solely known for its oil and mineral potential particularly
diamonds. Currently, oil makes up around 90% of the country’s exports and a half of the
country’s GDP.
Calls upon the Angolan leadership to utilize its energy resources to create more self-sustaining
economy and prosperity for the youth. Currently the economy is not self-sustaining because of
its dependence on oil prices.
Proposes that Angola sets up an Energy Committee that will make sure that revenues from oil are
used transparently and for the benefit of common Angolan citizens.
Urges action on building Angola’s human capacity through investment in education and
technological advancement. Despite its massive oil wealth, Angola’s literacy levels remain quite
low, particularly among women. Just 16% of public employees have high school education.
Suggests that Angola partners with other oil producing countries such as Norway to better learn
how best to manage and use oil revenues for the benefit of its citizens.
