In the teaching profession, teachers must strive to become competent. Dealing with
learners is complicated, and one must ensure that they facilitate the learning process by having a
wide knowledge base. Standard 2 indicates that the teacher must understand the learning
differences (LeFrançois, 2018). I exhibit the principle by understanding that each learner is
unique. There are cognitive variables that affect how each learner acquires knowledge. In
addition, learners have differing personalities. Intrinsic personality factors influence the learning
process. A learner is also influenced by extrinsic factors such as the socio-cultural background. I,
therefore, believe in accommodating all learners in my classroom. The principle can be
considered an essential element of teaching since teaching is all about accommodating all
learners. A teacher must seek to ensure that they take care of the needs of every learner. One
must employ different teaching methods that appeal to different sections of learners.
Standard three states that a teacher must collaborate with others to create a conducive
learning environment. I have coached basketball, and I know that a conducive learning
environment is paramount to the learning process. I always ensure that I actively look for every
opportunity to create a learning environment that will contribute to the success of the learning
process (LeFrançois, 2018). I look for a physical space that is conducive and ensure that the
learners can cooperate. I ensure that I create a communal environment that will facilitate the
sharing of information. I ensure that any content that I am delivering is understood by all my
team players. Setting the right environment is the cornerstone of the learning process. Without
the right environment, learners cannot learn. The delivery of content by the teachers is also
adversely affected by a hostile learning environment. Collaboration is key to ensuring that there
is a friendly learning environment.
Areas of Needed Growth
Standard six states that it is important to use multiple methods of assessment. The
assessment helps in monitoring the growth of the learner. I feel I need to understand how to
assess the learning process (LeFrançois, 2018). I also feel that I need to work more on this
principle to achieve my desired level of competence. Without assessing the learners, one cannot
gain a clear understanding of the learning process. As a result, I need to understand how different
methods can contribute to understanding the progress of my learners. I need to have a growth
mindset and an open mindset when approaching the issue. I will study more and look into the
multiple ways of assessment.
Standard 8 states that one needs to embrace different instructional strategies (LeFrançois,
2018). I also believe that I need to work on using different instructional strategies.
Accommodating different learners in the classroom setup can only be done through the use of
different instructional strategies. I will work with my tutors and study more on the existing
instructional strategies. I will also try to ensure that I practice developing competence in the area.
I believe that this will be key in guaranteeing a strong foundation as I progress in my career.
