You have been asked to replace the project manager who was heading up your firm’s new
compensation and benefits system. One of the reasons the project manager is being
replaced is because the project schedule had the wrong resources assigned (e.g., resources
who do not fully understand compensation and benefits). You have been asked to solve this
problem quickly by either replacing the resources or getting the resources up-to-speed on
compensation and benefits. Present your recommendation for solving this critical resource
problem by reviewing the pros and cons of each option.
The first option, replacing current resources, will involve firing all current resources and
hiring new ones who will be more qualified. The pros of this option are that the organization will
have qualified resources who know exactly what is required of them. They will, therefore, do the
job competently and with speed.
One of the cons of this option is that is very time-consuming. Firing and hiring new
employees takes a lot of time. This is because advertisement for the vacancies has to be made,
applicants shortlisted, and interviews conducted (Kloppenborg et al., 2019). This process can
take months to complete. It is also costly. Apart from being costly and time-consuming, it is not
guaranteed that the new resources hired will be capable of getting work done properly. There is a
possibility that some of the hired employees may excel in interviews but fail in their work.
The second option involves getting the resources up-to-speed on benefits and
compensation. This option will require using the organization’s resources to train current
resources on how they should perform their jobs. One key pro of this approach is that it saves
time. Compared to hiring new resources, training existing ones take a much shorter time

(Kloppenborg et al., 2019). Additionally, having the resources trained on the job will make them
much more effective and will create in them a strong attachment to the company.
The cons of this approach include disruption of workflow of other employees and
possibility of having them perform substandard work. It is worth noting that training is likely to
be short and, therefore, at the end of it the resources may not have acquired the proficiency
required to perform the duties required of them competently.
Based on this analysis of the pros and cons of the two options, I would recommend the
second option – getting the resources up-to-speed. The option is faster, is likely to impart the
resources with skills needed to perform the exact tasks required in the organization, and will
strengthen their loyalty to the company.
