Racial diversity in higher education

Racial diversity in colleges and universities in the country is not a process that admits a
diverse student population. Rather, it entails creating inclusive learning environments around
campus to promote equality and cohesion among the diverse student population. Faculty
members act as role models, and they guide students in different programs. They offer support to
students as they conduct their researches and make selections about their careers. They provide
mentoring services, which are said to directly impact a student’s GPA, retention rates, and self-
efficacy. According to McCoy et al. (2017), the interaction between students and faculty
members and the establishment of positive relationships among them is vital in ensuring that
students are well equipped with the norms of specific disciplines and understand what is required
of them. Wen students have a working relationship with faculty members; their campus
experience is better. It is one factor that leads to the maintenance of a diverse student [population
around campus. Retention rates are high as dropout rates reduce. The topic triggered the
following questions:

1. Besides having a supportive faculty, how else can an institution help promote diversity
   and create an inclusive learning environment?
2. How does a student’s background affect how they behave in a diverse learning
   environment?
