The current approach is heavily influenced by the Crime Control Model that emerged
in the later parts of the 20 th century. The model seeks to reduce crime through creating
deterrence that involves harsh and swift punishment (Hanser, 2017). The model has not been
effective. It has helped to increase the number of jailed offenders without reducing crime.
The model that I would advocate for is the Reintegration Model. The model seeks to reform
prisoners rather than to simply punish them. I believe that when the model is applied over
time it is likely to lead to a reduction in crime.
