Top Terminal values

Terminal values are goals that one desires or wants to achieve in the course of their
life. They are generally long-term goals. My top three terminal values are health, family
security, and a sense of accomplishment.

Health is important because there is nothing that I can achieve if I am not healthy.
Additionally, regardless of what I achieve in life, it will lose value if I am too sick to
enjoy the fruits of my work. It is for these reasons that I rank health as one of my most
important terminal values. My belief in the importance of health influences my
leadership style. For instance, I always encourage employees to be physically active and eat
healthy foods.

The second terminal value that I rank highly is family security. I have always been a
family-oriented person. I believe that having a loving family to support you throughout your
life is something everyone should strive for. Regardless of what I accomplish in my

professional life, no legacy can come close to family legacy. Regardless of my other
accomplishments, I will always consider myself a failure if I do not help my family members
to be happy and successful in their lives. As a leader, I put a lot of emphasis on work-life
balance so that employees have adequate time to spend with their families.

My third terminal value is sense of accomplishment. When I got old, I want to have
the feeling that I did everything that I could have done. I do not want to be an old person who
feels that they did not live up to their full potential. I believe that having a sense of
accomplishment will make me have a happy and contented life in old age. To make sure that
those under me also experience a sense of accomplishment when they get old, I often request
employees to submit to me their long-term goals. I then find ways of helping them to
accomplish the goals that they may have.

Top Instrumental values

Instrumental values are values that are critical for one’s achievement of their terminal
values. These values are usually acceptable code of conduct in a given society. Without
acting on instrumetal, it is very hard to achieve terminal values. My top three instrumental
values are ambitious, self-controlled, and loving.

Ambition keeps me motivated all the time. I set big goals and work hard to achieve
them. Thus, ambition gives me a sense of direction in life. It is through ambition that I will be
able to achieve everything that I am capable of and, therefore, allow me to have a sense of
accomplishment when I grow old. My personal ambition also spills over to my leadership
styles. I set big goals for my teams and then push them to accomplish those goals.

My second instrumental value is self-control. A self-controlled person has self-
discipline. For some people, self-discipline comes naturally to them. However, for others, it is

a skill that they learn. I am one of those people who had to learn about self-control and self-
discipline because I realized that I could not achieve my long-term goals without having this
quality. A self-disciplined person sets goals and then establishes a routine or plan to help
them achieve those goals. They then stick to that plan and avoid any distractions that may
prevent them from accomplishing their goal. As a leader, I make sure that every team task is
clearly organized with the goals of the project or task clearly stated and the timelines for
various deliverables provided.

The third instrumental value is loving. I am affectionate not only towards my family
members but also towards my colleagues. I believe that love creates a bond between people
which helps them to have fruitful relationships. Whether the relationships are with family
members or colleagues, they help to improve one’s well-being. As a leader, I maintain loving
relationships by helping to ensure that there are minimum conflicts at the workplace.
Additionally, I occasionally buy workmates small gifts just to show them that I appreciate
their love and companionship.
