The Four Blocks design gives young children many opportunities to attain goals set by
the educator. The four blocks include self-selected reading, guided reading, working with words,
and writing (Rasinski & Padak, 2013). These four provide a balanced program through which a
teacher is able to instruct children into learning how to read and write. The following is a weekly
schedule of a literacy block that I have created grade 2 learners. The weekly schedule is based on
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4 “Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support
comprehension” (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2020).
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Read the poem
“Our Dog’s
Name is
Roomba

  1. Teacher read
    aloud (the
    teacher reads
    aloud for
    children to
    provide an
    example of a
    model of fluent
    reading).

1.Practice sight
words using
playful activities
(sight words

    students in pairs
    and have them
    read the story)

    reads (students
    read a short
    story and record
    themselves.
    They then listen
    to themselves
    reading. They
    then explain
    whether they
    think they are
    reading well. If
    no, they

continue
practicing as
they record
themselves.)

2.Choral reading

    sight words
    individually.
    They do so

    practice reading
    by reading short
    phrases. The

    students are
    confident
    reading)
  3. Do choral
    reading
  4. Play spelling
    art
  5. Do repeated
    reading
    (children read

    the sight words
    on their
    notebooks
  7. Reader’s
    theater
  8. Make words
    and write them
    down
  9. Word sorts

    directed by the
    teacher on how
    to sort words

or suffices to
sort words into
