Mycenaean Death Masks were found by Heinrich Schliemann through his excavations in
Mycenae. They have striking resemblance to masks found in Egypt royal tombs 1 . To explain the
significance of this item, both scientific and artistic approaches can be used. For instance, these
masks were made from thin gold. Gold has been a valuable item that attracts a high price in
ancient Greek and around the world. These masks must have been used in the burial of the
wealthy individuals and those of high ranks in the society at the time. Scientific methods also
established that the bodies of the individuals with the masks were those of men only and one
child 2 .
Artistic approaches are visually striking in nature and have the capacity to tell a story
from their shape, form and material composition among others. The Mycenean Death Masks
were circular in nature. They had eyes, nose, ears, mouth and even moustache engraved on the
