the age of 10, he killed a buffalo. He also resisted the U.S government and organized the first
battle in 1863 when the U.S Army came after the Santee Sioux (Biography Newsletter, 2017).
Additionally, in 1865, Sitting Bull led his warriors to attack the newly built Fort Rice in North
Dakota and later became the chief of the Lakota nation in 1868.
Also, Sitting Bull participated in a Sun Dane ceremony where he danced for
approximately 36 hours and made sacrificial cuts on each arm before falling into a trance. When
Sitting Bull woke up, he revealed to his people that he had a vision of United States soldiers
falling from the sky like grasshoppers, which indicated that the U.S army would soon be
defeated (History.com Editors, 2019). In the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Sitting Bull ensured
that the women and children of the tribe were safe as other leaders fought in the battle. The white
settlers invaded and settled on the Indian lands during this warfare. They significantly reduced
the number of buffalos in the tribe, which the people depended on as their main food source.
After this encroachment, Sitting Bull moved his people to a safe place where they were free from
attacks from the U.S army.
Sitting Bull is vital to American history because he was a great leader. With the help of
the Sioux warriors, he successfully demolished General George Armstrong Custer’s force in the
battle of the Little Bighorn. Additionally, Sitting Bull led Sioux hunting grounds to expand,
especially into the westward territories (History.com Editors, 2019). Also, Sitting Bull is
important in history because he fought for the rights of his people despite facing superior and
armed U.S. Army troops.
