Sources of Current Aviation News

From my Internet research, I have identified five sources of current aviation news and
happenings. These comprise one website, two online magazines, one podcast, and one peer-
reviewed journal.
The website is Aviation Week Network, available at https://aviationweek.com/.
The two online magazines are:

1. Airlines International, available at https://airlines.iata.org/ and
2. Flight Global, available at https://www.flightglobal.com/.
   The podcast is Flightradar24’s AvTalk, available at
   https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/avtalk-podcast/.
   The peer-reviewed journal is the Journal of Air Transport Management (JATM), available at
   https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-air-transport-management.
   In the following paragraphs, I write a summary of each source and justify why I have
   recommended the source to my classmates. At this point, it is worth noting that aviation
   websites and online magazines are leading sources of information about tragic happenings in
   aviation. For example, when two Boeing 737 Max aircraft tragically crashed within a span of
   five months, aviation websites and magazines were among the first news sources to break the
   news (Imad, Saad Elbuzidi, & Chan, 2021).
   Founded in 1916, the Aviation Week Network is a Washington, DC-based media
   company specializing in business-to-business publishing and event production. Initially,
   McGraw-Hill owned the company until Penton Media bought it in 2013. Then Informa
   bought it in 2016. The company is best known for its flagship blog called Aviation Week &

Space Technology. Their blogs and analyses on current goings-on in the aviation industry as
well as on space, defense, business aviation, air transport, and aerospace provide useful
insight into emerging trends and operational best practices. I chose this website because,
going by the number of fans on its social media accounts, it seems to be the most popular and
possibly the most visited aviation news website.
Airlines International is an online aviation magazine published by the International
Air Transport Association (IATA). The magazine publishes news articles relating to various
airlines and aviation industry topics. The topics are divided into five columns: Knowledge
Center, CEO Interviews, Agenda, Comment, and Analysis. I chose this magazine because, of
all online aviation magazines, it is the most popular and, therefore, the most visited; in a
typical month, it is visited over 830,000 times (Locatory, 2015).
After Airlines International, Flight Global is the second most popular online aviation
magazine; in a typical month, people visit it more than 630,000 times (Locatory, 2015). This
is the main reason I recommended the magazine. The magazine delivers aviation news on
such topics as airlines, military, aircraft, and aerospace. It also hosts five aviation blogs and
job-search columns.
I chose AvTalk because it is possibly the world’s most popular aviation podcast if the
number of its social media (Facebook and Twitter) fans is anything to go by. The podcast is
published by Flightradar24, the global leader in flight tracking services. AvTalk describes
itself as an aviation podcast produced by aviation geeks for everyone who looks up whenever
they hear an aircraft fly past.
Finally, I recommended JATM for those who may want to read about the latest
happenings in aviation with academic rigor. The journal seeks to address, through superior
quality research articles and rigorous commentary, the major policy, management, and

economic issues facing the aviation industry today. The Covid-19 pandemic is an example of
an event that the journal has addressed extensively. For instance, an article published in the
journal soon after the outbreak of the pandemic examined how European airlines responded
strategically to the pandemic (Albers & Rundshagen, 2020).
